Oil Well Pump Motors- Oilfield Technology

Oil Well Pump Motors- Over the past 100 years, industry pioneers have discovered that they could improve oil well pump efficiency that could in fact extend economic life of far deeper wells by years.

Why was it a high necessity? This new resource would refine the phenomenal worldwide demand for an inexpensive lamp fuel, which was kerosene. The evolution of pumping oil from down deep has resolved a lot of issues with producing oil. Even by having over 500,000 wells throughout the United States, the oil production remains significant.

Types and History of the Oilfield

Stripper Wells

With the help of artificial lift systems, stripper wells, will help by fulfilling the demands of oil, even when we think they will run dry. Stripper wells are very efficient, but there are still tons of oil that remains trapped underground.

The average stripper well produces only about 2.2 barrels per day. About 85% of the U.S. oil wells are using these, while only producing 18% of all domestic oil.

Marginal oil and natural gas wells number about 650,000 of the nation’s 876,000 wells. Once these oil wells are shutdown, it’s hard to keep them in production because they take specialized equipment and skills.

Stated from the Oklahoma Commission on Marginally Producing Oil and Gas Wells, “This is an occupation where most of your work is done in all types of weather while working alone, with few thanks, and possibly a small herd of cattle as company.”

Eccentric Wheels/ Jerk-Lines

This production of oil wells was used by an oil well company in Pennsylvania. It was the central power source that could connect and operate several units by steel rod lines, also known as jerk lines. Steam power was the initial power to drive the eccentric power units. Being as efficient as central power units, time and technology was the change to the oilfield process.

Who was Walter Trout?

Walter Trout worked for Lufkin Foundry & Machine in 1925 when he sketched out the idea of the now familiar counterbalanced oil well pump jack. Most of the modern wells resemble Trout’s prototype, but provide more efficiency and reliability. You can see these throughout the countryside of Oklahoma, especially when driving on the highways.

What were the advancements?

Over time there is always something “better” or is benefitting from “smart” technology. Which is what exactly happened! There is a computer-based technology that is used to monitor and analyze pump systems in real-time. By having this monitoring with real-time, the well production and lift unit is capable of optimizing energy usage while maximizing the amount of oil recovered from the respective zones.

With the history of prototypes that are used today and combination of smart technology, the oilfield and oil well pump motors can produce a very large portion of the oil that is produced today.

Mardi Gras is also known as Fat Tuesday whereas the Monday before Mardi Gras is related to Lundi Gras. Within the Mardi Gras spirit, there are groups that organize parades that are referred to as Krewe. The Krewe’s perform an un defile (a French parade), and it draws a la foule (a French crowd).

One particular item sold and eaten is the King Cake. The King Cake is a colorfully decorated cake shaped in a ring, and inside the ring is a plastic baby figurine that is meant to represent Baby Jesus. The first person who finds the Baby Jesus is bestowed privileges and obligations.

As for the colors of Mardi Gras, they reference the first Rex, Latin for King, parade honored a Russian prince that adopted the prominent colors of the prince’s house: purple, green, and gold. The colors represent justice, faith, and power.

A traditional throw that is thrown from passing floats are highly sought-after and are distributed by the krewe members. The last saying that is “Laissez les bons temps rouler” means “Let the good times roll” which is a popular Mardi Gras greeting!

Oil Well Pump Motors- Regulations After Earthquakes

Oil Well Pump Motors- Over the past couple of weeks, Oklahoma has experienced two earthquakes that have affected regulations of the Oklahoma oil and gas industry. What’s it mean for this industry?

The oil and gas industry has new restrictions after the earthquakes. The new restrictions involve checking on the disposal well that is located near Guthrie, Oklahoma. The oil and gas industry had to practice pumping waste fluid into disposal wells that is responsible for Oklahoma’s exponential surge. The surge was caused by earthquake activity.

Within the past couple of years, Oklahoma has experienced an increase in earthquakes. The magnitude temblor of the earthquakes have hit a shocking 5.7 at one point and have remained within the 4.0 range over the past two years. These earthquake magnitudes were strong enough to injure residents and damage around 200 buildings.

Since 2014, Oklahoma was the one state to receive the most earthquake activity, along with California. So what does this mean for the state of Oklahoma? The Oklahoma Corporation Commission is checking up on the regulation of the oil and gas, along with frequent plug-backs to issue quake-related shutdowns and volume limits at disposal wells.

The plug-backs are a heavy cement plug in one or more locations that disable the flow of oil or gas from below the plug. These plugs are able to keep toxic wastewater coming to the surface. The disposal wells have been approved and used for economic methods of keeping the toxic wastewater from contaminating public water sources. The regulators have to keep an eye on this because it may come close to reaching the surface at points.

Although, these plug-backs are supposed to help during hectic times such as an earthquake, some scientists are saying, “Disposal wells are likely behind the increased and atypical seismic activity recorded recently in Oklahoma, and other states.”

The alternative is the Arbuckle formation that the state of Oklahoma has considered implementing because it’s the ideal place for disposal wells to pump full of drilling wastewater. The Arbuckle is easily found and fluid can easily run right through it. Since the Arbuckle is situated above crystalline granite rock, it makes it less likely to trigger an earthquake unlike the disposal wells that sit too deep into the earth’s soil that come in contact with the granite rock.

During these past two earthquakes with magnitudes of 4.4 and 4.7, the wells were ordered and forced to shut down production. The ones that were shut down were Sandridge Exploration and Production and Eagle Exploration Production because they were both located within three miles of the quake shaking. The amount of wells that were ordered to shut down were more than 60 disposal wells.

The dilemma is using plug-backs and disposal wells or switch to the Arbuckle. If there is a connection, what should be done and what can be done?
